MADISON (WKOW) -- The state's new lobbyist in charge of protecting Wisconsin's interests as the federal stimulus package is processed has two corruption-related convictions.
Department of Administration Secretary Michael Morgan announced the hiring of Tanya Bjork, 38, to be the state's director of federal relations and head up its lobbying efforts.
In 2005, Bjork was convicted of the misdemeanor crimes of altering the state work records of former Sen. Brian Burke (D-Milwaukee) and of being involved in political solicitations in the state capitol. In a plea bargain, Bjork provided prosecutors with information on Burke's actions and was sentenced to do community service work. Burke and several other state lawmakers were convicted in a wide ranging probe of the use of state employees and state resources to run secret, political operations. One of them, former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen (R-Waukesha), had his felony convictions thrown out and currently awaits a new trial.
In a news release, Morgan praised Bjork's work history, which most recently included a stint as the political director of President Obama's Wisconsin campaign.
