WKOW 27: Madison, WI Breaking News, Weather and SportsUW Visitor & Information Programs collect food for Second Harvest

MADISON (WKOW) -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Visitor and Information Programs (VIP) wants to help Dane County's hungry. This week, VIP is holding a food drive to benefit Second Harvest.
From now until Monday, December 7, you can drop off nonperishable food items at the Red Gym or the Welcome Center.
For every 1.25 pounds of food received, Second Harvest can produce one meal. That makes a big difference right here in Dane County. Every year 110,000 people in southern Wisconsin counties are helped by Second Harvest. Of those people, 10,000 are children living in Dane County.
"Last year as a team, we were able to collect and donate 872 pounds, which provided 698 meals to those struggling with hunger in the Madison community," says Jake Tackett, UW-Madison student and VIP employee. "Our goal for this year is to top that total. We organize the food drive as an opportunity for all members of the campus to come together and help families in need. An event like a food drive really shows that the campus and community care for each other and that we can all make a difference."
VIP will hold a "donation" day at the Red Gym on December 7. Free hot chocolate will be provided.
