MADISON (WKOW) -- There's a backlog of blood samples at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene.
The lab has a backlog of almost 1,000 blood samples from suspected intoxicated drivers.
It's taking 5-7 months right now, to figure out if drivers had drugs in their system.
That's due to stagnant staffing levels - and a case load that's increase 90% since a state law changed in 2003. The law determines drivers guilty of intoxicated driving if they have ANY trace of illegal drugs in their system.
Before 2003, prosecutors had to prove the driving was impaired by the drugs.
