MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison's $80 million capitol budget includes a project that builds a new library downtown.
$37 million facility would replace the current central library on West Mifflin Street and move it to West Washington.
It will be about 10,000 square feet bigger with 6 floors, which means more public space, parking and resources like books and tapes.
Supporters say the project could add up to 300 construction jobs to the Madison area.
"I humbly ask you to push this project forward, so we can get back to work and provide for our families, have an opportunity for health care and get back on our feet again," said Local 802 union member Eric Cobb.
The city would spend about $17 million on the project.
The rest comes from private fundraising, federal grants and the sale of the current land.
Alder Michael Shumacher introduced an amendment that requires half of the private funds to be raised and federal grants in place before the project starts.
"During these times we have to be mindful of the city's debt load. My amendment spreads the pain across the board," Alder Shumacher says.
Supporters of the library say the amendment could push the project up one to two years and drive up the cost up to $3 million.
A vote is not expected until past midnight.
