MADISON (WKOW) - A Madison Police Officer is on administrative leave after shooting and killing a suspect outside of a south side neighborhood. Police say a report of an armed robbery came in at Cousin's Subs on Park Street around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. A short time later, a patrol officer spotted a man fitting the description of the suspect involved in the area of Whittier and Lakeside Streets. Police say the officer confronted the man who had a gun.
"Upon making contact with the suspect a struggle ensued between the officer and suspect. A weapon was produced, the officer was forced to use deadly force," says Police Chief Noble Wray.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is not being released at this time.
The officer was taken to an area hospital, but did not suffer serious injuries.
Police Chief Wray wouldn't say if he was shot. He is a patrol officer with some years of experience at Madison's South District.
He has been put on administrative leave pending an internal review by the Police Department and the District Attorney's office who will be checking whether or not the shooting was justified.
The police believe the suspect who was killed was the same suspect involved in the armed robbery but it's all still under investigation at this point.
According to a Madison Police news release, this incident is believed to be the first use of deadly force by the MPD since July of 2007.
