Black Earth (WKOW) -- Scientists from the University of Wisconsin spent their opening day of the gun deer season focusing on a disease carried by deer.
In this case, the effort wasn't on Chronic Wasting Disease, but on Lyme Disease.
The UW researchers were at deer registration stations Saturday collecting ticks, the insects that carry Lyme Disease.
Researchers say cases have drastically risen since 2002, to about 1,800 cases of last year in Wisconsin.
They hope the samples collected on Saturday will help them learn how and why the disease is spreading.
"If they have ticks, they go into a vial, and then they identify what kind of tick it was and probably identify whether that tick contains Lime Disease," said entemology professor Dr.Que Lan.
Lan said the survey will also help UW direct public education efforts targeted at preventing Lyme Disease.
