MADISON (WKOW) -- This weekend marks the 7th anniversary of the U.S. invasion in Iraq.
Across the country, anti-war protests took place Saturday including Madison.
Dozens of people held banners and signs urging the Obama Administration to pull troops out of Iraq. Although the timing centers around that country, demonstrators are also calling for an end of fighting in Afghanistan.
"These cuts from education, health care, domestic programs and human needs have been restrained because of all the money spent on wars and defense spending," says Barbara Smith with the Madison Area Peace Coalition.
In Washington, D.C. seven protesters, including activist Cindy Sheehan, were arrested.
Sheehan began shouting "arrest that war criminal" through a bullhorn and pointing to the White House from an area of sidewalk park police had closed off Saturday afternoon.
The other six protesters were among a group of more than a dozen who had lain down on the sidewalk next to a row of flag-draped cardboard coffins outside the White House fence.
Sheehan has been a vocal critic of the war since her 21-year-old son Casey was killed in Iraq in April 2004.
