MADISON (WKOW) -- A legislative committee considered a bill that would allow the governor to try to block the Wisconsin National Guard's federal call-ups.
The Democratic-authored bill would require the governor to review every federal order that places the state National Guard on active duty to determine if the order is lawful.
"I think we owe it to the men and women of our National Guard to make sure when they are asked to go in harm's way, that there is no question that the authority involved in that service is legal, appropriate and proper," Rep. Spencer Black (D-Madison) said.
If the governor decided the order was not valid, the proposed law would allow the governor to sue in federal court.
A spokesperson for Governor Doyle did not respond to a request from comment on the governor's position on the proposed legislation.
