With the Olympics just around the corner, many sports which do not often see the spotlight will get their time to shine. One of those sports is speed skating.
The Madison Speed Skating Club practices twice a week at the Oregon Community Sports Arena. The group includes adults, but there are many kids who take part wanting to learn, well, one main thing.
"I like fast," little Edward said.
"Go fast," little Anna echoed.
"We try to teach them the basics, but they really just want to go fast," Madson Speed Skating Club coach Tom Riley said.
There are many things that the kids must learn to get their speed. From balance, to getting low, crossovers and good skating technique, the kids learn the ropes.
The sport is popular for many fast skating hockey players who do not enjoy contact and those who just like to race. But no matter why, it all still comes back to the desire to go fast.
Almost every 4 years, the Madison area is represented by a speed skater or two in the Olympics, maybe in a few years, these kids will keep the streak going.
