MADISON (WKOW) -- Wednesday became the first time on record UW-Madison cancelled a full day of classes because of bad weather.
Students proved you're never too old to get excited about a snow day. And when you're a poor college student, what better sled to use than a cafeteria tray?
Students borrowed trays from campus cafeterias and hit the campus "slopes" for free.
"The trays go really fast, and it's fun when they fall out from underneath you, whereas sometimes the sleds don't go as fast," said Drew Wallsworth, a junior at UW-Madison.
Other students prefer inner tubes and actual sleds.
"Every time you go down on a tray you just slide down and you go really fast and the tray jams into the bottom and your back just gets flung into the ground," said senior Justin Beck, who has since upgraded to an inner tube. "I was like, 'Wait a minute, for five dollars I could make this a lot more pleasant.' And now I fly down the hill; it's great."
Across campus, thousands of students organized a massive snowball fight.
Final exams begin the following weekend, but students say it's hard to study when inches of fresh snow are calling your name.
"You're outside in the snow, and it's the first-time ever snow day in college, so you might as well take advantage of it. Homework can wait for later," said Andrew Knighton, a sophomore at UW-Madison.
UW-Madison will resume classes on Thursday, but at least for Wednesday, the only thing on many students' minds was how to have the most fun in the snow.
