Report says DNR missing CWD management goals

MADISON (WKOW) -- Efforts to control chronic wasting disease has cost nearly $41 million in state and federal funding over the past 7 years, according to a new report out Tuesday by the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism.

The center says the rate of infection in adult bucks increased from 10 percent in 2007 to 15.5 percent in 2008 in the western CWD management zone, which includes western Dane and eastern Iowa counties.

Conservation Congress chairman Ed Harvey, head of the state's CWD management program, acknowledges the Department of Natural Resources failed to meet its goals for reduction, and says there is no question more needs to be done to stop the disease from infecting more of the state's herd.
