MADISON (WKOW) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says he will decide whether or not to run for Governor next year by the end of the week. Steve Chernof, Barrett's mayoral campaign director, confirms the decision will come this week, but says he does not know what it will be. He says he thinks Barrett is still on the fence and has not finalized his decision as of yet. Barrett would be the only major Democratic candidate for governor after incumbent Gov. Jim Doyle decided against seeking a third term and current Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton dropped out of the race.
Mayor Barrett has been under increasing pressure to run and just last week, he met with President Barack Obama's top political strategist and has been under increasing pressure to run. Madison businessman Kevin Conroy is also considering running as a Democrat. Major Republicans running for Governor are Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former congressman Mark Neumann.
