WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- U.S. troops could stay in Iraq longer than planned if elections in the country are delayed.
Those elections are set for January 16th and U.S. military commanders have said they want to keep the 117,000 soldiers now there for around two months after that date.
But political deadlock on how to register voters in Kirkuk province may delay balloting. The deadlock stems from tensions between Arabs and Kurds.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies notes recent bombings and says they show that "the Iraq was is scarcely over."
President Barack Obama has set a deadline of next August 31 to end U.S. combat missions in Iraq. All U.S. troops are scheduled to leave at the end of 2011.
