WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- New unemployment claims rose more than expected last week after falling for five of the past six weeks, a sign employers are still less likely to hire even as the economy shows signs of recovering.

The Labor Department says new jobless claims rose to 531,000 last week, up from 520,000 last week.

The total number of unemployed workers claiming benefits dropped for the fifth straight week from just over 6 million to 5.9 million.
