MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz today released his capital budget and highlighted plans to build a new library downtown.
"Today's economic climate provides both challenges and opportunities. In building this new library, we'll be able to take advantage of some of the lowest construction prices in decades, create hundreds of jobs and grow our tax base by opening up the block for development," Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said in an email to reporters. "And we'll be able to do it in a budget that is still fiscally responsible."
The Mayor announced the specific library budget plans in front of a crowd of library supporters and organized labor representatives.
He said the total project cost will be $37 million, with money coming from public and private sources. He also estimated the construction would involve 1,000 workers.
The estimated completion date is 2012, but the budget still must be approved by the common council.
