DNR on the lookout for boaters spreading invasive species this weekend

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The DNR is warning boaters not to spread invasive species this weekend, or you risk getting a ticket.

On August 1 & 2, DNR conservation wardens will be watching at Dane County boat landings.  The wardens are working to enforce an 8 year old law aimed at stopping the spread of aquatic invasive species that can harm lakes and rivers and hamper recreation.

Aquatic invasive species spread when they are transferred from one body of water to another on a boat or trailer, or in a bait bucket.

To avoid transporting aquatic invasive species to other waters:

  • Inspect and remove aquatic plants, animals, and mud from boat and equipment;
  • Drain water from boat and equipment (motor, bilge, live wells, and bait containers);
  • Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash;
  • Spray/rinse boats and recreational equipment with high pressure and/or hot tap water; OR
  • Dry boats and equipment thoroughly for at least five days before launching into a different water body.

Boaters who violate the law could get a ticket of $169 for a first offense, and up to $263.50 for subsequent violations.
