Court orders Racine man to return deer head to DNR

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Racine man, accused of removing a dead dear from the side of a road, eating it, and mounting the head, has been ordered to return the remaining parts to wildlife officials.

The incident happened in February 2008. According to the ruling, John Longo, now 69, took a dead deer off the road without a permit. He ate it and had the head mounted.

A Racine County Circuit Judge ordered Longo to give the head to the Department of Natural Resources when the agency requested, and if the agency did not issue a request by October 31, 2008, it had to issue him a permit.

Prosecutors argued the deadline was improper, and a 2nd District Court of Appeals reversed the decision, and ordered Longo to give the head to the DNR immediately.
