The UW announced Tuesday that privately funded improvements to the tip of Picnic Point, will be detailed at a meeting on Tuesday, June 9.
The session - intended to display the preliminary plans for the site - will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in Room 1325 of the Health Sciences Learning Center, 750 Highland Ave. Free parking will be available in Lot 85, located across Highland Avenue from the center.
Design options prepared by Ken Sakai Design Inc., of Madison, include a gathering space with a fire circle accommodating up to 80 people at the tip of Picnic Point, one of the prominent and popular features of the campus's 300-acre Lakeshore Nature Preserve.
The firm also envisions stone steps leading to the edge of Lake Mendota, removal of invasive plants and improving the lake view, stabilizing the shoreline and relocating a lake safety light pole to a less visually intrusive spot.
The plans would make access to the water, now available only by taking an eroding path down a steep bank, much easier.
Funding for the project has been made available by the Ebling Picnic Point Fund. The gathering space will honor the memory of Elsie Iwen Ebling and the Ebling family.
The proposed site includes a known ancient Native American habitation site. The university, in consultation with the Wisconsin Historical Society, is conducting a survey to determine the significance of the archeological resource.
